BARNUM. Is that the name of a real person, or just the title character in a Broadway musical? The answer is both. Phineas Taylor Barnum, known to nineteenth century American circus-goers as P.T. Barnum, lived from 1810-1891. He was a flamboyant American showman who created "The Greatest Show on Earth." When his traveling extravaganza encountered competition from a traveling circus run by James A. Bailey, Barnum decided to eliminate the competition by merging the two shows and establishing the world-renowned Barnum and Baily Circus.
